Help Expand Merlin Sound ID
You can help Merlin Sound ID learn new species and expand to new areas by making sound recordings, uploading them to eBird checklists, and tagging the background species audible in the recording. More than 150 recordings of each bird species are needed to train Merlin to identify a species by sound, and only 20% of bird species worldwide have enough recordings in eBird and the Macaulay Library.

Target Species Lists
These Target Species Lists are species that don’t have the minimum 150 recordings for the region. These regions are the ones where we’re actively working with partner organizations in the regions below to train Sound ID. Click on a region to view a list of target species to record.
If you’re birding in another region that doesn’t have a list here, please focus on recording anything that doesn’t have 150 recordings! You can find the number of recordings by going to ebird.org/explore and searching for a species and looking at the media stats. Stay tuned for more target lists in the future!
